CERAMIC PLATES

RTS Tactical ceramic armor pairs a hard strike face with a composite backer to provide rifle-rated protection for government agencies, military and security personnel, and responsible private citizens.

This collection includes ceramic rifle plates for torso and side coverage. Selected models use lightweight construction to help reduce the operator’s load during extended assignments. Multi-curve options balance ballistic protection, reduced weight, and enhanced mobility during special operations and extended assignments.

When a round strikes ceramic body armor, the ceramic face fractures and erodes the projectile. The composite backer helps capture fragments and absorb residual energy. Together, projectile disruption and projectile energy dispersion contribute to the performance of ceramic hard armor against identified ammunition. This construction generally presents lower ricochet and secondary-fragmentation concerns than uncoated steel armor. 

Weight varies by size, materials, and threat level, but lightweight ceramic armor can reduce load compared with steel armor designed for comparable rifle threats. Multi-curve ceramic body armor plates can improve torso contact and weight distribution. Buyers comparing lightweight rifle armor should still review each model’s weight.

Ceramic ballistic plates include 10 × 12 and 11 × 14 ceramic plate inserts, plus 6 × 8 ceramic armor inserts for compatible side pouches. Confirm dimensions and carrier compatibility before building an armor system.

NIJ protection levels identify defined test threats, not every round a plate might encounter. These categories help buyers compare protection against specific rifle threats under controlled test conditions. Official NIJ categories and informal manufacturer designations should not be treated as interchangeable: 

• Level III+ and RF2: Level III+ ceramic plates use an informal manufacturer designation rather than an official NIJ protection level. RF2 is a rifle protection level defined in NIJ Standard 0123.00 and used with NIJ Standard 0101.07. It includes the RF1 test threats plus 5.56 mm M855. RTS Tactical offers RF2 ceramic armor in stand-alone and ICW configurations. 
• Level IV and RF3: NIJ Level IV ceramic plates under NIJ 0101.06 are evaluated against .30-06 M2 armor-piercing ammunition. Under the current system, RF3 replaces the previous Level IV designation. Legacy Level IV armor remains Level IV unless the model has been evaluated under the newer RF3 requirements.

NIJ certification applies to individual models, not a collection. Buyers looking for NIJ-certified ceramic armor should verify the exact model on the applicable NIJ Compliant Products List. A stated NIJ protection level alone does not establish that an armor model is NIJ certified. 

Multi-hit performance is model-specific and applies only under the documented test conditions.

Stand-alone hard armor plates provide their stated protection without a soft armor backer. This can simplify a rifle-rated body armor loadout for patrol response, federal teams, executive protection, and personal protection.

An in-conjunction-with plate reaches its stated protection only as part of a specified system. The 7200 Series reaches its stated RF2 protection only when paired with the HG2 soft armor model specified for that system. The 9800 Series offers stand-alone RF3 ceramic armor, while the 7800 Series offers stand-alone RF2 protection.

Ceramic hard armor supports applications where rifle-rated armor plates must move with the operator. Multi-curve designs support SWAT teams during dynamic entries and extended deployments. Plate size should cover the torso’s vital areas without restricting movement. Side plates add lateral torso protection. Plate selection should account for required coverage, carrier fit, and the weight an operator can carry throughout the mission.
